2.A Managing Aspect of Natural Farming Methods

Teruo Taniguchi(Institute for Agro-Microbiology)

Supply of organic produce is very small in Japan although it is increasingly demanded. In order to encourage the activities of organic agriculture, the Law on Promotion of Organic Agriculture was enacted in December, 2006. However, it is still indispensable to examine what problems prevent farmers from practicing organic agriculture at a managment level. Hearing was conducted on the farms that run natural farming methods in Aomori and other northern Japanese prefectures, to figure out the causes of success which distinguish some farmers from others, supported by MOA Natural Farming and Cultural Agency, a non-profit organization that has been contributing to the promotion of organic agriculture for long time in Japan. Results show that farmers' strong will and executive ability to embody their noble purpose for pursuing natural farming methods is the most influential reason. This article provides many examples that are instructive to farmers who want to manage organic agriculture successfully.
