Detrimental factors which could affect the safety of compost were surveyed in livestock excreta. Heavy metals, synthetic chemical substances and antibiotics as feed additives, pesticide residues in feeds and pathogenic organisms including drug resistant bacteria, pathogenic germs and parasites were noted as risk factors in animal excreta. Sterilizing effects of heat exposure on pathogenic organisms as well as the degradation and transformation of chemical substances by microorganisms are expected while fermentation proceeds in compost. These effects of compost fermentation need to be elucidated in details.
